Review By H.N.Narahari Rao
Destiny the Chinese film which was in the competition section of Asian section of the 9th Bengaluru International Film Festival is an important film from the perspective of a mother of an autistic child who undergoes a traumatic experience throughout her life. Directed by Zhang Wei who came to limelight through his very impressive film Factory Boss is a very promising filmmaker who takes up contemporary issues that are faced by the society. Regarding Destiny, I have closely observed many instances in a large number of family circles who are undergoing the same experience as Tian Lin has suffered in this film. It is a traumatic experience for a woman to face such a situation in life. The film is very realistic and it should be seen by the society to have first hand understanding of the sufferings of a dedicated mother who is ready to face any situation to make her son live independently.
As the mother of an autistic child a woman faces innumerable problems. Even in India we have millions of such instances and the awareness that is created among people in the society is not much. The film makes a realistic portrayal of unpleasant events surrounding the child
that take place at home, at school and other occasions in social life. To present such incidents realistically on the screen one should have closely made a case study of such real life stories. And I am happy to mention here that Zhang Wei has made a deep study of such cases and has recreated life like situations on the screen.
I am particularly impressed by the fact that he has built a perfectly matured character in Tian Lin as a mother, a house wife and a determined personality who never accepts defeat. Her understanding of the life is so well portrayed that when her husband thinks of having one more child who can take care of the disabled Xi He she flatly refuses making him perplexed. He comes to know of the reason and confesses it when he sees the fate of Tian Lin’s brother who is totally mad implicating the fact that this problem is genetic. The husband ultimately confesses that he does not need one more child. He decides to dedicate his life to look after the welfare of his wife Tian Lin and the autistic child Xi He. This is here, I personally felt happy that he chooses to remain loyal to the family rather than running away from it. This is a positive conclusion.
